SGU - Term 1

It's been quite a while since my own Term 1 and I've seen quite a few friends go through what I went through when I got to this school. I was in the GSP class in England, which, in itself provides a lot of extra stress and adjustment, but it is quite similar to coming to Grenada. If you were like me, this is what it felt like when you arrived:

-You are in a new country, with a bunch of strangers.
-You have no bank account, no cell phone, and no sense of where anything is.
-You have a new currency to learn.
-You have very little idea about what you're about to study, how much you're about to study, and how to study it.
-You are now working under the influence of a Giant loan which you prefer not to think about.
-You are worried about making a good impression and finding some new friends.
-You think the $700 worth of medical books the school provided you is enough. (Some of you will need more resources).
-You are excited and ready for this new adventure called Medical School.

Well don't worry, we're here for a reason, and that's to pursue our dreams of a career in medicine.  Congratulations, I'm sure you worked very hard just to get here.
...but things never get easier. You're about to do a lot of hard work. Don't be scared and don't worry, it's going to be tough, but its all worth it.

Some Advice - First of all, help each other out. We're all in this together and we are not in competition. It's one of the reasons I do this blog, is because I know it helps some people along the path. If it helps you, don't mention it. Glad I could help.

Anyway, my friends, one point of advice for term 1: any chance you get to go out or have some fun, or explore the island, and become better friends with people early on... i say DO IT! The classes only get harder. At this point you can't really comprehend what "a lot of work" is or "being behind" is like. I mean, you can, but its going to surprise, and maybe even worry you when it hits you. You only get more and more work to do, and the feeling of being behind and that you should be in the library studying will NEVER go away. You might be behind all term, and thats okay, you will learn to deal with this guilty feeling. After all, you won't feel guilty sitting in the library for hours on blogs and Facebook, so why not be hiking in the jungle for waterfalls or having a drink with some new interesting people from all over the world? Take advantage of these chances, they don't come all the time. Just balance your time well and you'll be much happier.

Well hopefully this blog gives you some good direction when you need it and goodluck!
Try starting with the tabs in the red bar above, each section has a few articles. Cheers!
